West Highland Way Guide

Conquer the Highlands: Hike the Legendary West Highland Way Guide

The West Highland Way is a long-distance footpath in Scotland, stretching 96 miles (154 km) from Milngavie, just north of Glasgow, to Fort William in the Scottish Highlands. It's a classic trek that draws hikers from around the globe, offering breathtaking scenery, challenging terrain, and a true taste of the Scottish wilderness. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a relatively fit beginner, the West Highland Way promises an unforgettable adventure. Prepare to be captivated by lochs, mountains, and the ever-changing Scottish weather! The path's history is relatively recent, officially opened in 1980. However, the routes it follows have been used for centuries by drovers, soldiers, and travelers. The Way utilizes old military roads built by General Wade in the 18th century to control the Highlands after the Jacobite uprisings, as well as sections of old drove roads used to move livestock to market. This blend of history and natural beauty makes the West Highland Way a truly special experience. The West Highland Way offers a variety of activities for tourists. Hiking, of course, is the main draw. You can choose to complete the entire route, which typically takes 5-9 days, or tackle shorter sections as day hikes. Along the way, you can enjoy stunning views, wild camping (with permission), and visit charming villages. Be sure to sample some traditional Scottish fare in the local pubs and restaurants. Haggis, neeps, and tatties (haggis with mashed turnips and potatoes) is a must-try for the adventurous eater, and a warming bowl of Cullen Skink (a creamy smoked haddock soup) is perfect after a long day on the trail. Don't forget to try a dram of Scotch whisky!
